I was always an organized person until I started working full time. My schedule consists of waking up really early, getting on a train & getting home around 7:30/8 pm. When I get home from work, the last thing I wanted to do was organize my home. As a result, it became cluttered & I couldn’t find a method of organization that I loved/worked until I discovered the KonMari method. If you are someone who wants to organize their space/life, then you need to try this method.
What is the KonMari Method?
The KonMari method is a method to de-clutter your home/de-clutter your life. If you want to try the KonMari method, you must commit to de-cluttering your space for a long period of time. It won’t work if you only spend an hour a day de-cluttering. In order to get the full effect of the method, you must spend at least 4 hours on organization. For example, I would spend 6 hours on Saturday’s working on organizing my space.
The first step is taking out all of your items of a certain category such as clothes & you donate, throw out, or sell anything that does not spark joy. Once you are left with all of the items that do spark joy, you fold them in a way that is similar to origami. This allows for you to fit more things into square compartments & easily organize your space.
How Did It Change My Life?
It was life changing coming home to an organized house. I was able to come home & I felt like I could relax in my clean space. It is mind-boggling how your space can affect how you feel. When I came home to my cluttered home, I wouldn’t want to be productive. When I would change out of my work clothes, I would want to throw my clothes on the leather seat in my room instead of putting them nicely away. When my space is clean, I want to continue to keep it clean. When it is messy, I don’t mind if it stays messy so I’m not as clean.
The KonMari method made me appreciate my clothes more. I found a lot of pieces that were just taking up space in my wardrobe. They were keeping me from noticing the things that I love to wear. I had this dark shirt that I hadn’t worn in months covering this beautiful vibrant top that I completely forgot about. My closet & drawers now only have the clothes that I truly love & bring joy. Picking out clothes to wear no longer is something that I dread doing every single morning.
How Can You Implement The KonMari Method In Your Life?
Learn more about the KonMari method before you begin
Watch YouTube videos, read blog posts & learn more about the KonMari method. There are many blog posts about how to properly fold/store away your items. If you do your research, you will be more prepared for the day when you decide to organize everything.
Start with organizing your clothes & work your way to other item categories
I personally thought it was easiest to start with clothes. We tend to have a lot of clothes that do not bring us joy & they are just sitting in our closet. Clothes also do not have as much sentimental value so they are more easily donated, sold, or thrown away.
Take before & after pictures
It was so satisfying looking at my before & after photos for my dresser. It reminds me that I want to keep the dresser looking how it is now & I do not want to go back to its disorganized mess.
Reward yourself once you are done
It is hard work organizing your belongings, especially when you are doing it for hours. Make sure you reward yourself with doing something that you enjoy once you are finished with your organization.

Stephanie,
Girl, when I worked my last job I felt the same way – long days due to a commute, and totally unmotivated to get myself organized. I’m definitely going to take this approach with the KonMari method because 1) I’m downsizing and 2) I don’t need all this stuff!
Cheers girl,
xoxo
